Chris Pioli ‘07 Computer Science Virtual Tour Designer The environment is a part of us and we are a part of it. Nature is beautiful, and whenever I can escape to it from life’s hustle and bustle, I can find peace. I couldn’t stand living in a world without a tree, be it in a forest or a city park. Above all other creatures, we as human beings have the greatest impact on our planet and we are therefore its stewards. I am working on the Solar Decathlon because I want to fulfill my responsibilities to the planet using my “unique abilities.” I hope that new, realistic implementations of solar technology emerge on the market. Improving public awareness of the potential solar technology has informed the public that it is not only doable but also cost-effective (or becoming that way). I hope that the Solar Decathlon will influence policy makers and politicians on this technology and start discussions on how solar technology can aid impoverished countries. Perhaps the presidential candidates will notice our entry and become inspired! I am most involved in the communications, marketing and design teams. If I were an engineer I would most definitely be working with those teams, but my real talents and passion lie in design. The engineers can make the innovations and technology. What I’m doing is showing how everything works in a simple manner. Post-Santa Clara Plans: Continue working on the Solar Decathlon team, get a job, later earn a Master’s Degree, and then design the world’s greatest video games. Favorite sustainable thing to do: I always enjoyed collecting recyclable materials - especially aluminum cans - and sending them to the local recycling depot. Turning off lights to conserve energy is also a staple of mine. |
